February 14th, 2020 -- Saint Kitts and Nevis has once again delighted visitors to the 2020 Taipei City Lantern festival with a colorful depiction of Port Zante our world class cruise port in the heart of Basseterre. “With the incredible success and growth of the cruise industry, it seemed natural to feature Port Zante as this year’s lantern at the 2020 Taipei City Lantern Festival, Saint Kitts and Nevis’ Ambassador to the Republic of China (Taiwan) H.E. Jasmine Huggins stated. At a press conference to announce Saint Kitts and Nevis’ participation at the 2020 Taipei Lantern Festival, the Deputy Secretary General of Taipei City Government conveyed his congratulations to the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis for its remarkable achievements in cruise tourism and also expressed his deep appreciation to the Embassy for its continuing support to Taipei’s Lantern Festival.

In his remarks, H. E. Ambassador Alexander Yui who represented the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), recalled fondly his visit to Saint Kitts and Nevis with President Tsai Ing-wen and noted that Port Zante formed an important part of the cruise industry of Saint Kitts and Nevis, especially with the newly completed second cruise pier. He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was pleased to support the Embassy in its initiative to display a lantern.

Ambassador Huggins also informed the press corps present that the inspiration to feature Port Zante was two-fold, in that it promoted cruise tourism to the Federation as well as provided an opportunity for Taiwanese to learn more about the Federation. Port Zante has welcomed over 1 million passengers in recent years and at the end of this cruise season, is expected to surpass last year’s total. Ambassador Huggins also used the opportunity to express appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their continued support to the initiative which has also allowed Saint Kitts and Nevis to participate for the first time on a national scale at the 2020 Taiwan Lantern Festival. More than 2 million persons visited the Taipei Lantern Festival in 2019. Brochures about the Federation are handed out nightly to pedestrians by assistant at a booth next to the lantern. Large displays of QR codes at the booth directs visitors to the tourism websites of both Saint Kitts and Nevis.

In addition, as a means of support to the initiative during the festive holiday period, the Embassy has also undertaken a bus promotion with several photographs of important tourists’ spots on both islands adorning the sides of the city buses that will cover 10 important and well-trafficked bus routes in Taipei and New Taipei City. The month long bus promotion concludes March 5th.
