New appointments, and conferrals announced at The UWI

    The UWI Regional Headquarters Jamaica. Monday, March 2, 2020 -- Several decisions on new appointments and conferrals were approved during the meeting of the University Finance and General Purposes Committee (UFGPC) at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Regional Headquarters on February 14, 2020. 

     

    Among the appointments announced at the meeting, were four promotions to the highest academic rank – that of Professor – at the University. At the Cave Hill Campus, Dr Troy Lorde is now Professor of the Economics of Tourism; alongside his colleague Dr Philmore Alleyne who is appointed Professor of Accounting. Dr Raffie Hosein from the St Augustine Campus, is Professor of Petroleum Engineering and Dr Christopher Charles from the Mona Campus holds the position of Professor of Political and Social Psychology.

    In recognition of their distinguished and exemplary careers, four retired Professors were conferred the titles of Professors Emeriti. They include Professor Upindranath Singh, from The UWI Cave Hill Campus, Professor Evan W. Duggan and Professor Ishenkumba A. Kahwa both from The UWI Mona Campus and Professor Patricia Mohammed from the St Augustine Campus.

    Two new Professors of Practice in Injury Research and Prevention were appointed to be attached to the Faculty of Medical Sciences at The UWI Mona Campus. The honorary professorship positions were awarded to Dr Elizabeth Ward and Dr Lucien Jones. Both Professors of Practice are expected to contribute to the development of a UWI Centre for Injury Research and Prevention based at the Campus. 

    Dr Rupert Lewis, Professor of Political Thought, was appointed Research Fellow at the new PJ Patterson Centre for African-Caribbean Advocacy. Established within the Vice-Chancellery, this Centre provides a framework to enable leaders from the Caribbean and Africa to engage in strategy to provide public advocacy around major issues affecting both regions.  

    Another highlight of the February 14 UF&GPC meeting was the decision to approve the recommendation of the Cave Hill Campus to honour Professor Sir Hilary Beckles’ 13 years of service as Principal of The UWI, Cave Hill, by renaming the Main Administration Building the Hilary McDonald Beckles Administration Complex.
