COVID-19: Tips for Staying Protected & Calm

By: Patrick Martin, Press Release

12 March 2020 -- It is normal to feel anxious about COVID-19 – a significant threat to personal health and national development.  However, residents of St. Kitts and Nevis are resilient having ongoing experience preparing for and dealing with external-origin threats.

The list includes seasonal hurricanes, pandemic H1N1, Chikungunya, Ebola, Zika, and the omnipresent risk of earthquakes and tsunamis.

We have to get on with their daily lives “With God in all our struggles”. COVID-19 too will pass. In the meantime, there are actions within our control.

Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live (Jim Rohn). Taking good care of our bodies starts with adequate sleep - minimum 7 hours for adults, 10 - 12 hours for children.  During sleep, cells and tissues undergo repair and restoration. Therefore, sleep deprivation and disturbance are unhealthy. Let us rally to protect our sleep from noisemaking in our communities.

Cleanliness is Godliness. Good personal hygiene and sanitation reduce the likelihood of common cold, flu and COVID-19. Cover your cough and sneeze with tissue, discard it in a trash receptacle, wash hands with soap and water, and keep fingers away from your face.

Part of environmental cleanliness is the human right to clear air which can be impeded by vehicle exhaust fumes and smoke (from cigarettes, grills, etc.). These irritants to the eyes, nose, throat and windpipes make it easier for viruses, bacteria and mold to invade the body.  Let us petition the authorities to prevent or intercept pollution hazards.

Food is medicine. Medicine is food (Hippocrates). In general, food refers to items consumed as liquids and solids. The best liquids are water and coconut water. There is also water in all fruits and vegetables. The best solids are leafy vegetables, ground provisions, legumes (peas and beans) and whole grains.

Local food contains adequate amounts of life-sustaining and immune-boosting nutrients, including vitamins and minerals. Man-made products such as mega-vitamins and mega-supplements, alkaline water, “Miracle Mineral Solution”, and the like, are harmful to health.  Let us eat what we grow and grow what we eat.

Exercise is the key not only to physical health but to peace of mind (Nelson Mandela). Exercise is part of physical activity. Stretching, gardening, walking, dancing, swimming, running – they stimulate movement of the skeletal muscles which improves circulation, the delivery of nutrients to organs, and the removal of wastes. Let us be vigilant about the upkeep of beaches, pathways, and green spaces.

Knowledge is power. Having accurate knowledge and a preparedness plan go a long way to allaying fear and remaining calm. In crisis situations, there is no substitute for sound government leadership particularly the all-important duty to keep the people informed in a factual and clear manner. Authoritative sources of COVID-19 information include Ministries of Health, CARPHA, PAHO-WHO, Public Health Canada, and US CDC. Let us heed their advice and instructions.

Avoid information overload. Some media content is anxiety-provoking to the point of being “addictive”. In such conditions, affected persons feel they must be glued to “Breaking News” or they may miss something.  COVID-19 continues to expose those on social and other media who enjoy inflicting distress upon others. The best response is to log-off and leave them at the foot of the cross.
