Social distancing designed to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus

Chairman of the National Disaster Mitigation Council, Honourable Attorney-General, Vincent Byron
By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 25, 2020 (SKNIS): With public health officials reminding persons to be vigilant during the COVID-19 pandemic, Chairman of the National Disaster Mitigation Council, Honourable Attorney-General, Vincent Byron, is appealing to persons to practice social distancing as this could help to reduce the risk of contracting the disease from other people.

“The concept of social distancing is one for each of us to keep ourselves safe, and that fundamental is that we need to be aware that this virus is spread through contact with others – community spread. It is spread when we come into contact with surfaces and other types of conveyors of the virus and so it behooves each and every one of us to be constantly aware of coming into contact with each other and with surfaces that are not clean,” said Minister Byron.

The chairman reminded all that the “danger is when someone arrives and is properly screened but they may show no symptoms and they may feel well.” It is for this reason why persons need to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures and encourage others to do the same.

“And so, the question of social distancing is a precaution to ensure you do not come into contact with someone who may transmit that virus to you, you unknowingly, they unwittingly,” said the attorney-general. “And the best form of social distancing is that we reduce going to crowded places.”

He made mention of the cancellations of mass gathering events such as church and sports, and applauded organizations for taking such decisions. The regular Lenten services scheduled on Wednesdays have been cancelled so that “we do not come into contact with others.”
