BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - GUNFIRE again erupted near St. Johnston’s Village tonight (Sept. 14), killing one man and leaving two others seriously injured.

Initial reports indicate that the attack took place around 9:30 p.m. at the shop of Damion Weekes, which is located in Haynes Smith Village.

Reports from residents in the area indicate that Weekes and two other men, Laughton ‘Laffie’ Phillip and Nigel ‘Ayo’ Browne, were conversing at Weekes’ establishment when at least one assailant opened fire on the men.

The sounds of six gunshots were allegedly heard by the residents of the area.

Police and rescue service workers arrived on the scene shortly thereafter, and all three men were rushed to the Joseph N. France General Hospital for gunshot wounds to the body.

Medical personnel were unable to save Phillip’s life, subsequently making him the 22nd homicide victim for St. Kitts-Nevis in 2009.

Information reaching SKNVibes further indicates that Weekes is currently listed in critical condition, and it is unclear at this time if doctors will be able to save his life.

The Press and Public Relations Officer for the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, Inspector Cromwell Henry, confirmed that the shooting had taken place, but said that he could not immediately divulge any details about the incident.

The attack on the men occurred less than 12 hours after Devon Jeffers of Trafalgar Village was shot in his legs while at the junction of Central Street and Shaw Avenue in McKnight.

Police investigations into both incidents remain ongoing, and persons with information are being asked to contact the force at 465-2241 ext. 230. Any information given may be done under the condition of anonymity.
