BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AFTER months of awaiting the ratification of results of the March 2 General Elections, the Federation’s Political Leader, Dr. Timothy Harris, has sent a congratulatory message to Guyana’s newly-elected President, Mohamed Irfan Ali.yt

In his statement, Prime Minister Harris said: "I extend to you, Your Excellency, and to your Government and people of Guyana my heartfelt congratulations and support as you take the helm of leadership at what is a watershed time of unprecedented promise in your country’s history.”

The elections were up in the air due to claims of voter irregularities and claims of fraud, followed by a number of court challenges.

Ali was on Sunday (Aug 3) sworn-in as the President after the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) ratified the results as the country continues to see increasing numbers of confirmed cases of COVID-19.

In his statement, Dr. Harris said: “You also assume the Presidency at a moment of great challenge and opportunity for CARICOM to champion and execute a region-wide vision and agenda aimed at achieving food security in the Caribbean during and after the coronavirus pandemic. Your Quasi-Cabinet responsibility within the Caribbean Community Agriculture, Agricultural Diversification and Food Security, which includes the Regional Transformational Programme for Agriculture (RTP) and our Banana Industry then makes you well-positioned to meaningfully address and contribute to ameliorating some of the most pressing developmental challenges that our countries face, particularly during the COVID-19 global pandemic.”

Welcoming the new President, Prime Minister Harris said he is looking forward to strengthening the bilateral relationship between Guyana and St. Kitts and Nevis that would mutually benefit citizens and residents in the two countries.
