Court orders recount of spoiled ballot in Constituency

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE High Court today (Sept. 25) ordered a recount of the rejected votes in Constituency One of the June 5th General Elections.

According to reports out of the court, Justice Trevor Warde handed down the judgment this morning, paving the way for the process to begin.

The Constituency, which was won by Geoffery Hanley of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, saw the People’s Action Movement’s Ian Liburd challenging the result via an election petition.

When the dust had settled in Constituency One, Liburd lost by 24 votes.

Liburd, who is the former Minister of Public Infrastructure, has often expressed confidence that he would have a successful outcome from the challenge.

Speaking with SKNVibes, Liburd expressed optimism, alluding to some of the challenges encountered on election night.

“I have always been a confident individual...and I don’t think in a teacup; I think in a barn,” Liburd said.

He added: “From before the count started there were obvious insidious attempts at personally destroying me as the Representative of East Basseterre. It started up at the Kim Collins Stadium where agents for the one portraying the view that he is the Representative...in fact, I was dismissed summarily from the counting on the night.”

Following this morning’s judgment, the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party in a statement confirmed that October 2 has been identified by the Court as the date for the examination of the ballots.

According to the SKNLP, Dr. Hanley’s legal team is confident, based on the evidence given by witnesses in the matter, that the results would not change.
