Weekend Vibes:What Independence means to you?

Shedel
By: Nevis Bureau, SKNVibes

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – AS the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis celebrates its 26th Independence Anniversary today (Sept. 19), Weekend Vibes took to the streets of Nevis to find out what Independence means to them.

Shedel - Independence to me means another milestone for our country; a time to celebrate and have fun.

Yahsonn Tafari- Independence to me does signify a step closer to where we should be. However, I don’t think we will be fully independent until we attain republic status. Independence from the mother colony with the monarchy still the head of state (Governor General) still seems hypocritical to me. As Lucky Dube puts it: “Mickey Mouse freedom”. Yeah!!!!!!

Iroy - Thorough independence is liberation. Independence means nothing to me. What we need is true liberation; we don’t need to take the colonial way and make it work, we need to create our own.

Glen - Independence is just a next time to spend money with all the celebration events that are being held. It’s also a time to celebrate how far we make it.

Jamal - A time to come together and enjoy our freedom; a time of love and appreciation. Independence is supposed to be a holiday and I am not happy because Saturday is not looked at as a holiday. We should have gotten it on Monday.
