Virtual activities for Carnival in 2020/2021

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE National Carnival Committee has made a decision to scrap road activities and other traditional events for this year’s Carnival and move everything to a digital platform.

Confirmation on the new direction came this morning (Oct. 2) from Minister of Culture Jonel Powell.

According to the Minister, over the last several months the Committee had held discussions with key Carnival stakeholders and decided to move ahead with the plans for the staging of this season’s event.

“The reality of COVID-19 is at times uncertain and challenging. Having considered the health and safety of the citizens and residents of the Federation, as well as the unpredictability of the pandemic, the Committee, with the approval of Cabinet, has made the decision to cancel traditional events for this year’s National Carnival which would attract mass gatherings, such as all pageants, J’ouvert, Grand Parade and Last Lap celebrations,” Powell disclosed.

This announcement follows several others made earlier in the year by various territories, and comes on the back of the disclosure earlier this week by Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley stating he has cancelled that territory’s Carnival slated for February 2021.

Pointing out that the National Carnival was birthed out of the aim of highlighting the arts, music and folklore, and in so doing uniting the people, Minister Powell intimated that the Committee and its partners decided to host virtual activities for this year.

“This new virtual format will allow the St. Kitts-Nevis National Carnival Committee to showcase our unique Carnival product to our citizens and residents and a more diverse and wide-ranging global audience.

The Minister disclosed that the calendar of events would be released shortly and it would showcase unique elements of the local culture as well as aspects of the Christmas festivities.
