Probe continues into death of young Customs Officer

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE police are still probing the death of the young Custom Officer, Andrew Douglas, who was killed at Customs House in Bird Rock by a single gunshot to the head.

The Police Force and the Customs Department have received backlashes for the young man’s death and details released by both entities surrounding his demise.

One such criticism is the release of the autopsy report, which vaguely stated the cause of death of the young officer.

The September 22 release from the Police Force said, “Resident Pathologist, Dr. Adrian Nunez, performed an autopsy on the body of Andrew Douglas of Molineaux on Monday, September 21, 2020. Dr. Nunez concluded that death was as a result of severe traumatic brain injury caused by a single gunshot wound to the head”, stopping short of giving death of whether he shot himself, was he shot at close range, or if the gun used in the incident was fired from a distance.

But the Top Cop, in responding to a reporter’s request for an update on the investigation yesterday (Oct. 1), said they are still carrying out their investigations.

“As of Monday, the post mortem, the autopsy was done by our Resident Pathologist and the information was provided to the police [and] we are still waiting on some items and some results that were sent overseas for forensic analysis.”

In its first press statement on the incident, the Police Force said that officers were called to the Department sometime after 1:00 p.m. on September 17, and their investigations at that time revealed that the 21-year-old Douglas received a single gunshot wound to the head.

He was then taken to the JNF General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
