The Government of India’s two-year long celebrations to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was started in October 2018 and concluded with today’s event.

Hon. Brig Mark Phillips, Prime Minister, Hon. Hugh Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation, Hon. Robeson Benn, Minister of Home Affairs and His Worship Pandit Ubraj Naraine made their gracious presence at the event and offered their homage to Mahatma Gandhiji. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, general public were not invited to attend the event in person. The event was live streamed through the Facebook and Twitter accounts of the High Commission [@indiaingerogetown and @IndiainGuyana] and Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre [@svccgeorgetownguyana and @iccr_guyana] and telecast live on E-networks and TVG Channels.

High Commissioner of India, H.E. Dr. K.J. Srinivasa, delivered brief remarks on the occasion emphasizing the relevance of Gandhiji, his principles and philosophy even in the present day. He urged all citizens to follow the teachings of Gandhiji as the world is going through a tumultuous period when oneness and inter-personal harmony & unity are the necessity of the day. He also said that he heard a lot about Gandhiji in his conversations with Guyanese brothers and sisters.  This reflects Gandhiji’s influence in Guyana and in the Caribbean.

In a video message on the occasion, Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, H.E. Dr Timothy Harris, in his message lauded the greatness of Mahatma Gandhi and elaborated how Gandhiji’s philosophy inspired many leaders across the world like Martin Luther King Jr who was instrumental in American Civil Rights Movement.  He further acknowledged the influential legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and praised that Gandhiji represented the best of the human spirit.

On this occasion, India also pays respects to another great freedom fighter and statesman, the second Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri as today is his birth anniversary. India remembers 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan', the slogan of Lal Bahadur Shastri which is etched in our minds as it captures the true spirit of India. Lal Bahadur Shastri's public life has left an indelible mark on the country. He was unique in the way he connected with the common man. Humble, soft-spoken but a strong leader, ShastriJi took over as the Prime Minister in May 1964. In Independent India's first cabinet, Lal Bahadur Shastri held key portfolios like the Home Affairs and the Railways.

During the last two years, the High Commission organised a number of activities as part of the celebrations of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. These included recitation of Gandhiji’s favourite bhajan ‘Vaishnava Janato’ by renowned Guyanese singer Lisa Punch and popular artistes like Ms. Kimberly King from Antigua & Barbuda and Mr. Sylvestor ‘King Socretes’ Hodge from St Kitts & Nevis, LED projection of film on Mahatma Gandhi at Giftland Mall in October 2018, Essay writing competition for school children, release of commemorative stamps on Mahatma Gandhi in association with postal departments of Guyana and Antigua & Barbuda etc.
