BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOR the third consecutive year, the Federation’s State Scholar has come from sister island Nevis as Sashia Godet is this year’s recipient of the prestigious honour.
A student of the Charlestown Secondary Sixth Form, Godet attained Grade One passes in Accounting Units 1 and 2, and Economics Unit 1 and 2 in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) of Caribbean Studies. She also obtained Grade Two passes in Management of Business Units 1 and 2.
According to a Ministry of Education communiqué, the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) determined the Federation’s Scholarship Rank Order Listing, which was based on the candidates’ performances in the 2008 and 2009 CAPE.
Candidates are ranked by the highest number of Grade One passes obtained in seven qualifying units.
Both Godet and her runner-up, Michelle Slack, achieved five Grade One and two Grade Two passes. Slack received her Grade One passes in Caribbean Studies, French Units 1 and 2, and Spanish Units 1 and 2, with Grade Two in History Unit 1 and Literature Unit 2.
In order to break the tie, CXC computed T scores for both candidates based on established criteria. Godet was awarded a T score of 485 while Slack earned 474, giving them the State Scholar and Runner-up positions respectively.
Godet is currently pursuing a business-related degree at the University of Waterloo in Canada, while Slack still resides in Nevis.
Godet’s achievement marks the third consecutive year that a Nevisian has won the scholarship. Last year’s recipient was Agiel Browne, who is currently studying Information Technology at the University of the West Indies.
The last Kittitian State Scholar was Shauntel Liburd in 2006.
