Antigua/CARICOM postpones CARIFESTA until 2022

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE continued presence of the Coronavirus in in the region has forced the Government of Antigua and Barbuda to postpone the region’s largest cultural festival, CARIFESTA, for one year.
    Disclosure of the postponement came yesterday (Oct. 10) from Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Daryll Matthew following consultation with the CARICOM Secretariat, the Regional Cultural Committee and the Interim Festival Directorate.
    The event has been postponed for a year, from August 12-22, 2021 to August 12-21, 2022.
    In making the disclosure yesterday, Minister Matthew said he had discussions with stakeholders and the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda on the challenges of hosting the event and the best way forward.
    He noted: “The recommendations coming out of these discussions were as heart-breaking as it was unanimous”.
    The decision taken by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda was supported by CARICOM’s Assistant Secretary-General Douglas Slatery.
