Majorettes lead the December 1, 2005 World AIDS Day March in St. Kitts.
Basseterre, St. Kitts (December 05, 2005):
The World AIDS Day March in St. Kitts and Nevis gave the general public an opportunity to see samples of the colourful costumes designed for the "Choices" carnival troupe.
"Choices - Knowing is Beautiful" is an initiative of the National Youth Ambassador Network (NYAN) in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Youth. It features four sections promoting responsible behaviour in preventing HIV/AIDS contraction.

A spokesman for the NYAN noted that it was important for the costumes to be included as part of the December 1, World AIDS Day March. The official explained that other than the obvious message of HIV/AIDS awareness, persons were able to admire the costumes on the road.

This exposure has generated conversation among the populace as interest in the troupe has picked up. In a previous interview with SKNIS, the official noted that some persons are reluctant to register with the group because of the stigma associated with the global pandemic. He called on the mas players to overcome this perception and join the "fun troupe with a message" as the 2005 - 06 National Carnival season celebration gets underway.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas (third from left) was one of the many spectators who came out to support the 2005 World AIDS Day March in St. Kitts.

Four sections entitled Abstinence, Be Faithful, Condom Use and Dont Abuse Drugs and Alcohol, often referred to as the A, B, C, D method will make up the Choices troupe.

The official said the troupe also provides an opportunity for new and non-traditional mas players to positively impact society in an enjoyable manner.

Interested persons can collect registration forms from the Ministries of Health and Youth on Church Street, as well as the Festivals Secretariat at Port Zante. There is a fee of $100.00.
