BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A duo’s get-away plan may not have been as fool-proof as they expected, as one of them was arrested shortly after they robbed a rural shop with the use of a firearm.

According to unconfirmed reports, two young men went to a shop in the Belle Vue area, said to be owned and operated by an individual identified only as Shirley, and robbed the entity.

Other unconfirmed reports suggest that the thieves were successful in removing some $26 from establishment.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) with responsibility for Crime, Joseph Liburd confirmed that a robbery did take place about mid-morning today (Sept. 23) and that one of the two perpetrators was apprehended by police.

Liburd informed that while the robbery was in progress, police were notified and quickly responded which resulted in them nabbing Tabernacle resident, Rawle Benjamin. A firearm, which he said is a .38 Revolver, and four rounds of ammunition were also taken into police custody.

Benjamin’s alleged accomplice, Glenville Maynard alias ‘Blue Steel’ of Tabernacle and Keys, is being sought by the authorities in connection with this incident.

Liburd warns that Maynard is “considered armed and dangerous” and should not be approached if seen. Persons knowing of his whereabouts are asked to contact the Tabernacle Police Station at 465-7227 and pass on the relevant information. Any information given will be treated with the strictest confidence.

This is the latest in string of gun-related incidents directly affecting businesspersons around the island, and the police have encouraged them to take measures to safeguard themselves from the likelihood of a repeat of such incidents.

Investigations into the robbery are ongoing.
