By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – OVER the weekend, health officials in Guyana recorded the youngest COVID-19 victim when a six-day-old succumbed to the dreaded virus that is running rampant in the South American country.

The country recorded over 4,000 positive cases and 150 deaths, and the latest was that of the six-day-old on Saturday (Nov. 28).

In a media statement on yesterday (Nov. 30), the Ministry of Health explained that the baby’s death was “COVID-19 related”.

“The latest fatality is a male infant, six days old from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) who died while receiving care at our medical facility.

“The MOH expresses sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased and will make every effort to provide all the necessary support during this difficult time to render any assistance needed," the statement read.

Guyana, unlike St. Kitts and Nevis, has seen significant spikes in COVID-19 cases and deaths, and the Government is apparently unable to control the outbreak which has spread to all regions of the country, including the hinterland areas.

Media reports out of Georgetown point to the Government placing a curfew on several regions, while the Capital has seen people showing a total disregard for the virus with block, club and indoor parties on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, the Ministry said it has contacted all relatives and persons to facilitate contact tracing and rapid assistance to everyone who might have been exposed to the now-deceased person.
