Nevis ‘Top Boy’ wants to be an engineer

Trevorn Nisbett
By: Donovan Matthews, SKNVibes
CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – TREVORNE NISBETT wants to be an engineer; he just has not decided in which particular field as yet. But who can blame this talented 17-year-old for being unsure after his achievements in the 2009 Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC)?

Trevorne sat 12 subjects, gaining nine distinctions and three twos which made him the highest achiever on Nevis. One look at the subjects he wrote and anyone would understand his current indecisiveness. The former Gingerland Secondary School (GSS) student studied Mathematics, English, Chemistry, Physics, Principles of Business (POB), Accounts, Electricity, Building Technology, Technical Drawing, Information Technology, Economics and Electronic Documentation and Preparation Management (EDPM). He achieved all this while managing to be the school’s leading track and field athlete.

The quiet-spoken youth told SKNVibes that his success was driven by the encouragement of “lots of different people”.

‘With them behind me, I didn’t want to let anyone down. I worked hard and put my all into what I was doing, and by the grace of God I succeeded.”

Among those whom he did not want to disappoint were his teachers who he said saw his potential, even though he thought it was too much work.

Trevorne, who ran the 400-metre at the 2008 Carifta Games, said it was not too difficult for him to combine studies and athletics because he is naturally athletic. Sports however took a back seat to studies as he entered exam year.

A member of the Gingerland Wesleyan Holiness Church, Trevorn also finds time to attend youth meetings at church and take lessons in learning to read music and play the piano.

He had lots of praise for his family, especially mother Jacqueline Maynard and grandparents Olivia and Norman Maynard who supported him throughout his studies. He also identified his mentor Ron Daniel, and primary school teacher Elvira Simmons, who continued advising at high school, as persons who made major inputs in his efforts.

According to the Valedictorian at GSS’s 2009 Graduation Ceremony, his immediate plans are to attend the Sixth Form College to pursue Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Caribbean Studies.

His advice to students aspiring to follow in his footsteps is to not be afraid of hard work, since with hard work anything could be accomplished.

“Once you believe in yourself and don’t let anybody put you down, then you can do anything you want to.”
