Land and house for every adult says Harris

Dr Harris addressing the large crowd at Mansion
BASSETERRE ST. KITTS (September 28, 2009) -- The area representative for Constituency Number Seven, Belle Vue to Ottley’s, and the Federal Minister of Finance, Dr Timothy Harris, has reiterated the Labour government’s policy on land and housing and is advising people to exercise prudence by putting aside some money.

“We say we will ensure that every adult man and woman who wants land will get land,” said Dr Harris at a well attended campaign rally at Mansion Sunday night. “Those who want a house will get a house, but all will not get at once. It takes time, be patient your time will come and it is coming soon.”

He at the same time encouraged the beneficiaries to pay for their land and their home so that the programme can continue and revolve.

“It does not make sense to be arguing about land and home and you are not putting aside some money now, so when you get through you can make the down payment on the land, you can pay the surveyor and in case of the house you can pay for the electricity, the water and insurance, if you are serious,” observed Dr Harris. “Start to save something.”

The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Public Works, Utilities, Transport and Postal Services, Dr Earl Asim Martin and was addressed by the Minister of Housing, Agriculture and Fisheries, Cedric Liburd, Labour candidate for Constituency Number 2, Marcella Liburd, Labour candidate for Constituency Number 4, Glenn Phillip, and Deputy Prime Minister Sam Condor.

“We have transformed the lives of many young people,” Dr Harris said. “This generation of young people has done better under Labour. Many of you have been freed of the indignities of overcrowded homes because Labour takes care of you. You have your own keys to your home, you have privacy and your dignity has been enhanced.”

The area representative took time to congratulate the young students from Mansion, Tabernacle and Molineux who were the first batch to enter the new Saddlers Secondary School, which was built at a cost of over $12 million.

“It is a state of the art high school,” informed Dr Harris. “It will offer a range of support to our children. It will be a high school offering all the regular school subjects plus more technology, more innovation, more survival skills, more help in developing good behaviour-respect, love and service to others.”

Dr Harris also congratulated students who returned exemplary CXC results at the Cayon High School, of whose six feeder primary schools up to 2008, four were in Constituency Number 7. The students named were, Elsie Ann Harry (11 subjects), Azintha Richards (10 subjects) and Josianne Bertie, Caspian Henry and Kedesha Weekes (9 subjects).
