St. Paul’s win Premier League Title

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - DESPITE high elbows, heavy tackles, showers of blessings and a few brawls, the S. L Hosford St. Paul’s team weathered the storm to edge out RAM’s Village Superstars 2-1 to lift the Super 6 League title last evening (Dec. 16).

Watched by a near-capacity crowd at Warner Park, the skills, attacking mindset and defensive teamwork made the difference for the team from out of town.

In what was a long season for both sides, it was an evenly matched game from the early exchanges, but it was St. Paul’s that drew first blood when Keithroy Freeman netted in the 18th minute through a header from a corner.

That took the wind out of the sail of the opposing team, which played a somewhat passive game, allowing numerous scoring opportunities for St. Paul’s that went off target for the remainder of the first half, much to the joy of the partisan Village crowd at the Stadium.

Spurred by their coach and with the best of three series on the line, the Basseterre-based Village team return to the field with renewed vigor and a burst of energy that saw them in the attacking mode.

That energy caught St. Paul’s at bay a number of times before a blast from Tahir Hanley in the 67th minute brought about the equaliser, nearly blowing the proverbial roof off Warner Park.

But with a few showers of blessing pouring down, tempers began to flare with yellow cards being dished out to seven players from the two sides before the final whistle.

Additionally, three players - two from St. Paul’s and one from Village - were issued reds cards and sent off the field.

But with the game down to 10 and nine players for Village and St. Paul’s respectively, it was the Man of the Match Freeman who blasted home a shot in the 81st minute that wrapped up the series, ensuring that the cup went to the rural area.

Speaking with SKNVibes Sports after the match, Iroy ‘Congo’ Jeffers congratulated the players of both sides for a competitive series but acknowledged that his side wanted to close it out last evening.

He explained that after talking with the players at the halftime, despite being up, it worked as the Village side came out fighting and equalised.

Parliamentary Representative for the area, Dr. Denzil Douglas commended the team from his Constituency for winning the cup, explaining to SKNVibes that despite the two areas being close politically, the rivalry was good.
