CXC still reviewing queries and concerns

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - OFFICIALS at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) are nearing completion of the queries and reviews of the May/June Examinations, even as plans continue for this year’s sitting.

The 2020 examinations were marred by controversy following the change of modality for the way grading and results would be undertaken.

Students, parents and teachers from Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago in the south to Belize and Jamaica in the west had complained about grades returned for several subject areas for those who sat the examinations.

Ungraded, absence, failures and even no results were returned for students who sat the examination, prompting complaints from education officials from across the region, including St. Kitts and Nevis.

The body is said to have completed 80 percent of the reviews and is working to complete the remainder in a short timeframe.

Against that backdrop, they are calling for patience from all stakeholders and parents.

“The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) appreciates the patience and understanding of our stakeholders as we finalise grades for Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) July/August 2020 examinations.

“Throughout the review process, we have endeavored to be thorough and to comply with our quality assurance processes. At this time, 80% of Requests for Reviews have been completed. On 31 December 2020, final results were shared with CXC Local Registrars and on 4 January 2021, CXC will release grades to students via the online student portal,” CXC said in a statement.

CXC changed this year’s modulation due to the COVId-19 pandemic and the challenges it posed to students, the body and markers.

CXC said it values and appreciates all of their stakeholders’ feedback and in 2021 are committed to listening to and engaging with each stakeholder group as they work together for the mutual benefit of all.

“CXC is currently in dialogue with the Ministries of Education across the region to finalise details for the administration of the regional examinations in 2021. These details will be shared with our stakeholders and made public within the coming weeks,” the body added.
