BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MEMBERS of bands in St. Kitts keep residents’ heads spinning like a played out record as the ‘Bands Draughts Game’ continues its shuffling of musicians.
SKNVibes has learnt that Kelvin ‘Ras Kelly’ Kelly is back with the Small Axe Band since a public fallout in early 2007.
Kelly told SKNVibes exclusively that he has decided to put everything that was said behind him and focus on being a part of the band.
He also said that ‘it was a big drink up” when word got out that he would be rejoining the band.
“We are going to have a meeting tonight (Sept. 29) where everything will be made official,” he said.
Kelly, who had been with Small Axe for over 10 years, left the band in 2007 after a major fall out with some of the members and management.
Following that fall out, Kelly joined the Nu Vybes Band in the same year and just before the 13th Annual St. Kitts Music Festival, he left that band which was a shock to many.
He told SKNVibes then that he was considering forming his own band, but now that he has rejoined Small Axe, Kelly feels that it is the best move for him.
“I didn’t want to start a band and then later down the road regret not rejoining the band when I had the opportunity to. So now Small Axe is back and ready to take the place again,” Kelly said.
Now that Kelly has rejoined the Small Axe Band, two of its members have decided to leave.
The keyboardist and drummer, whose combined time with the band amounted to some eight months, said that they left the band officially on Monday (Sept. 28) following a meeting concerning Kelly’s return.
The two musicians also declared that they do not feel comfortable working with Kelly.
“We done say we not playing with Ras Kelly…for me, personal reasons; and now they have dissed us we just decided to resign,” the keyboardist said.
The musicians further stated that because of their discomfiture due to Kelly’s presence, they saw the opportunity for membership with d’Vybz Band and immediately decided to take it.
