CARICOM slams US over Cuba’s designation

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WITH the outgoing Trump Administration making significant international affairs decision and issuing sanctions and designations, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is hitting out at one of the recent decisions involving a long-time ally.

In a slew of designations, the fledgling administration in a bid to spite the incoming Biden Administration, designated Cuba a “State Sponsor of terrorism”.

Cuba, a communist society, has long been the target of a number of President Donald Trump’s policy reversals that were implemented by his predecessor President Barack Obama.

Among the measures he rolled back were travel policies and monies - the levels of funds that could be remitted by persons living in the United States to Cuba.

The latest designation comes at a time when the outgoing regime is looking to stymie and limit foreign policy decisions that the new government can make.

However, CARICOM member states, which have benefited significantly from the Cubans in the area of health, have come out and denounced the recently made decision.

The regional body, in a media statement issued yesterday (Jan. 13), said the “unilateral declaration by the outgoing United States administration to designate Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism” should be denied.

CARICOM noted that the Spanish-speaking territory’s international conduct “does not in any way warrant that designation”.

In a strongly-worded statement, CARICOM said that the attack on the country would adversely affect its international standing and its social, human and economic development “and is another misguided action in addition to the unproductive, unnecessary and illegal financial and economic embargo already imposed on this Caribbean nation by the United States”.

The United States has long strong-armed Cuba under the Castro brothers; however, back in 2008 President Obama moved to slowly create a cordial relation with the nation, which continues to assist CARICOM members with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Against that backdrop, CARICOM has called for the immediate review and reversal of “these unjustified actions are taken in regard to Cuba” and looks forward to the United States moving towards normalising relations with Cuba.
