BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - Fire Chief Everette O’Garro said the fire that took place in The Village, West Basseterre on Saturday (Jan. 9) was deliberately lit by a male of unsound mind.
Providing an update on the findings of that fire, O'Garro explained that early information obtained by fire officers indicated that it was intentionally done.
“It appears that there was an individual who lived on the premises, who had some type of mental issues,” he disclosed.
Video footages showed a small two-bedroom house was engulfed in flames and, according to the Fire Chief, the entire inside of the property was damaged, including its contents.
“We understand that two individuals lived at the property and they were able to escape the fire, but investigations would have revealed that one of the individuals looked really disturbed and suspicious, and when questioned indicated that he wanted to kill himself,” the Fire Chief added.
According to O’Garro, the individual did not sustain any injury.
There have been a number of house fires in recent months, but those incidents are still under investigations by fire officers.
Saturday’s fire came several days before a fire broke out at a Chinese restaurant on Cayon Street in the vicinity of the Basseterre Police Station.
Fire officers suspect that that fire was caused by a “grease explosion”.
