Windies player test positive for COVID-19

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - CRICKET WEST INDIES (CWI) has confirmed that one of its players on the tour of Bangladesh has returned a positive test despite leaving the Caribbean negative.

Young Barbadian bowler, Hayden Walsh Jr. tested positive on Wednesday and has since been placed in isolation.

According to CWI, “following PCR tests administered on Wednesday, January 13, Cricket West Indies (CWI) can confirm that Hayden Walsh Jr. has tested positive for COVID-19 and will now undergo a period of self-isolation”.

Walsh Jr. is the second player to test positive in recent weeks, as Guyanese Romario Shephard was withdrawn from the touring party after he returned a positive result in his homeland.

The young cricketer, who is said to be asymptomatic, first returned a negative test result on arrival in Bangladesh on the weekend and then had a positive return on his test in Dhaka on Tuesday.

CWI noted that the result was verified by a second positive test result.

“The West Indies touring squad has been in individual isolation since arriving in Bangladesh and so there has been no contact between squad members since arrival. In accordance with the established medical protocols, Walsh remained isolated from the West Indies squad and is now under the care and supervision of the Team Physician, Dr. Praimanand Singh,” CWI said in a statement.

The young cricketer will remain in isolation until he returns two negative PCR test results, which means he is unavailable to play in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh.

“All other members of the West Indies touring squad returned second negative COVID-19 tests, after undergoing four tests within the last 11 days,” CSWI reminded.

The three-match ODI Series starts on Wednesday, January 20.
