Subsidised training in hard economic times shows Nevis Government’s commitment to social contract, says Legal Advisor

CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (SEPTEMBER 30, 2009) -- Legal Advisor in the Nevis Island Administration(NIA) Mr. Patrice Nisbett, said the Administration’s decision to more youths for training in Trinidad despite difficult economic times, demonstrated its commitment to education and training.

Mr. Nisbett’s comment came when he gave brief remarks at a recent briefing with the 20 trainees and Social Development Minister Hon. Hensley Daniel, at the NIA’s conference room in Charlestown.

“This government is once again showing its commitment to education and training by committing the necessary resources to ensure that the young people in particular in this country are trained...

“At this time resources are scarce and the economics of the time dictates a certain level of curtailment in spending but having regard to the commitment that we have made, having regard to our social contract with our people, we are pressing ahead with this programme notwithstanding the economic times,” he said.

Mr. Nisbett explained that the sitting Nevis Government had designed its programmes with people development at the fore, since that was critical to the island’s overall development.

“We believe that in order for the country to develop, one would have to ensure that the human capacity of the country is first developed. In order for our young persons to have some social upward mobility, you can do so much more readily and much more easily through education and training,” he said.

The Legal Advisor noted that the current NIA had changed the paradigm in Nevis and the new mantra of the government remained one of education and training.

Mr. Nisbett reminded the trainees that the programme was geared toward the development of skills on Nevis and urged them to engage their minds thoroughly during their course of studies. Nonetheless, he told them they should not be distracted by the many extracurricular activities while in Trinidad.

“I encourage you to partake of some of the activities but most importantly you must be good ambassadors. The only way you can be good ambassadors for Nevis is to receive the necessary instructions, pass the examination and come back to Nevis a more equipped person, a certified person and one that would be in a position to dictate at which price your service comes,” he said.

The 20 trainees are the second group of students to be sponsored by the NIA to pursue technical studies at the metal Industries Company Ltd. for three months in Trinidad.
