25 January, 2021 -- The Cable stepped up its corporate citizenship several notches with the roll out of Free WiFi at the St. Johnston Community Center on Friday 22 January. This initiative is a partnership with the Ministry of ICT to fulfill the joint vision of both The Cable and the ministry for the small Caribbean island nation to become a world leader in the delivery of digital services, while providing affordable, available and accessible Internet for every citizen in St. Kitts.
Pat Walters, The Cable’s Chief Executive officer was clear in emphasizing her company’s desire “to provide digital opportunities to the ordinary man, to the young, to the unemployed, to the single parent to the differently abled”. In her words, “Let us build products that can leap frog existing goods and services, build the next revolutionary software or simply increase our Agricultural output by googling the relevant information”. Her remarks also reflected her passion and respect for the skills and talent of our people and echoed her dream that “one day our citizens and residents will not be judged by the square miles of this nation, the small population size, a perception of limited access to the digital world, but will be recognized and applauded as leaders in the digital age.”
Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett was delighted that the project kicked off at the St Johnston Community Center but was also anxious to see her Ministry’s and the Government’s vision to make St. Kitts and Nevis a world leader in digital services delivery for citizens, residents, the private sector and investors. This she said would be done in a manner that is safe, efficient, interactive and responsive to the needs of end users, and would allow for economic growth and contribute to national development, especially when all sixteen centers were completely Wi-Fi-enabled.
She had high praise for The Cable and its team of local IT professionals, stating that, “The point isn’t just to have access to the internet, the point is to begin to stimulate the communities to see the possibilities associated with access. This level of access can see our community centers transform into a resource that allows for programs geared towards business development, education assistance through after school programs, a meeting venue for small businesses, and a place for virtual presentations/meetings”. She encouraged the people of the communities to take advantage of the possibilities that this kind of access would generate, including the transformation of “our community centers into mini-innovation hubs. A place where we can see the emergence of new tech businesses or any type of business for that matter”. She also challenged other businesses to follow The Cable’s lead and assist in meeting the needs of the community centers for equipment, devices and other resources.
The launch event was witnessed by a number of civil servants from the relevant Ministries including Education, ICT and Community Development as well as the members of the media.
