Former Guyana Power Company CEO heading to NEVLEC

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Nevis Electricity Company (Nevlec) has confirmed that the CEO of the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated, Albert Gordon, a Jamaican, will take up the appointment as General Manager of the company.

Gordon, according to reports out of Guyana, indicated to the new government that he was not willing to renew his contract to remain as the power company’s CEO, with many speculating that it would have been a rocky road for the Jamaican.

In making the announcement at his monthly press conference yesterday (Jan. 29), Premier Mark Brantley explained that Gordon was chosen after a robust process and numerous applications from around the region.

The new GM, who will take up the post in February, comes with a wealth of knowledge in the field as he currently holds a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Masters of Business Administration in Financing.

Brantley disclosed that Gordon was chosen by the Board of Directors and that he is also qualified in Water.

Gordon held the position of CEO in Guyana for three years after his February 2018 appointment, with his contract expected to end on January 31, 2021.

According to local newspaper Stabroek News, Minister of Public Infrastructure in Guyana, Deodat Indar stated that Gordon was not willing to extend his contract.

“He is presently employed as a CEO [Chief Executive Officer] of the Guyana Power and Light Inc. His contract ends on the 31st of January and he will then come to us and take up his position as of February 2021,” he said.

Minister Indar had indicated that the CEO had written to the former administration indicating that he was not willing to continue; however former Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson denied those claims, instead pointing out in a social media post that "My discussions with Albert were the exact opposite to that statement. The CEO was eagerly looking forward to finishing the job which he started - increasing the redundancy and protection on the main grid, increasing the generation stock, and transitioning GPL to receive renewable energies. Albert and his executive management team were the driving force behind the strategy, planning, and acquisition of the new 46MW generators that the PPP are now seeking to claim as their solution to end the blackout woes of the country".
