Athletics Association President optimistic about 2021 Season

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - PRESIDENT of St. Kitts-Nevis Athletics (SKNA), Delwayne Delaney is optimistic about the 2021 Athletics season despite the threat posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has curtailed many of the sports programmes locally and globally.

Updating SKNVibes Sports on plans for the 2021 Season, Delaney said his team is currently working to ensure that the season runs smoothly ahead while being cognisant of the protocols and the necessary restrictions currently in place by the National COVID-19 Task Force.

The season was expected to sprint off on last Friday (Jan. 29) with one of a series of Challenger Meets, formerly the Developmental series.

“Our executive team has been working very hard to ensure that we execute our plans and programmes as best as possible. We know that it will be difficult as we are still in the pandemic, but, nevertheless, with the clubs’ support and the athletes we know we can do great things for this season,” noted Delaney.

Much of the 2020 Season was curtailed following the national lockdowns to prevent the spread of COVID-19 locally, including a lot of the Challenge series events geared towards developing the younger athletes.

The President told SKNVibes that “going into the 2021 Season that pandemic will more or less still be around, so we are planning accordingly. We are trying to see how we can manoeuvre ourselves in having more Challenge series meets and bring some more flare to the environment”.

He said the feedback so far has been very positive and they are moving full steam ahead with their plans and, once approvals have been given by the authorities to go ahead, the various meets would be staged.

With regards to the staging of the Scholastic Meets, the President reminded that those meets come under the purview of the Ministries of Education and Sports, but at the level of the SKNA discussions are being had to have those fit into the calendar of activities since the CARIFTA Games is currently on the regional calendar.

“We are engaging both Ministries to see how we can work around that and see how we can compromise and see how we can involve and engage these athletes, especially at the youth level.,” explained Delaney.

The SKNA boss noted that fans could expect the same level of COVID-19 protocols to which they have become accustomed at various business establishments when they attend the various meets this season; as, according to him, the athletics body is governing itself by the recommendations set out in the SRO.
