BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Federation’s count for COVID-19 cases increased on Saturday (Jan. 30), when another American tourist returned a positive result that pushed the total number of confirmed cases to 38.

In a media statement issued today (Feb. 1), the Ministry of Health noted that St. Kitts and Nevis continues to see a gradual increase in the number of positive cases of COVID-19 when one additional case was confirmed.

According to the Ministry, the international traveller landed in the Federation on January 16, 2021 from the United States of America and has since been in quarantine at one of the COVID-19 certified hotels.

The patient was duly notified and is now in isolation.

St. Kitts and Nevis is one of the territories within the region that has recorded minimal numbers of confirmed cases of the virus, making it a hot spot for travellers.

As a result, health officials were expecting the “gradual increase in the number of positive cases of COVID-19” among tourists, the Ministry noted in its statement.

“The risk of further cases occurring in the Federation remains very high,” the Ministry added.

A breakdown of the number of confirmed cases shows that there are 38 confirmed cases in the Federation with 26 of those recorded on St. Kitts and 12 on Nevis.

“Please note that 35 cases have fully recovered with zero deaths. There are now three (3) active cases. These patients are stable and are being monitored,” the Ministry disclosed.

Meantime, the Minister said that more people are  adhering to the COVID-19 prevention and control measures with there being reports of the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 variant in the region.

It is against that backdrop that the Ministry is pushing the basic principles of  wearing a face mask when in public places, maintaining good hand hygiene, maintaining physical distance of at least six feet from others when in public places and avoiding crowds and events.
