Is this incident a lawful arrest or an act of brutality?

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - IT is written that the purpose of the Royal St Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) is to uphold the law fairly and firmly, without fear or favour, to prevent crime, to pursue and bring to justice those who break the law, to keep the peace, to protect, help and reassure residents and visitors and to be seen to do all this with integrity and impartiality.

But is this mandate being executed conscientiously by every member of  the RSCNPF?

Currently, a photo and videos on social media are being circulated from Nevis with images of a man lying face down in a drain and a law enforcement officer standing on the upper part of his back, seemingly to make an arrest.

While standing on the man’s back, his companions looked on but did not not rebuke him on the act, while man could be heard repeatedly saying that he could not breathe.

Those images have caused raised eyebrows in the twin-island Federation as some law abiding citizens are asking, “Were the police executing and arrest or blatantly displaying an act of brutality to a civilian?”

Though the circumstances of the situation has not been established, police could be heard in one of the video asking the man several questions, much to his discomfort while lying shirtless in the  concrete drain.

Yesterday (Feb. 6), SKNVibes reached out to the Commissioner of Police for a comment on the matter, but he was at a funeral at that time.

This publication had also reached out to the Officer-in-Charge of the Nevis Division, Superintendent Lyndon David, for a comment but was unsuccessful as all calls to his cellular phone went unanswered.

However, when a call was made to the Charlestown Police Station in an effort to garner information on the matter, SKNVibes was told  to call again between 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Monday.

This is not the first time the police have come under the radar for the manner in which they execute arrests. In several instances, officers have been accused of brutalising residents while executing arrests.

However, the Police Force has from time to time called on residents to respect the lawmen when they are making arrests, as some individuals were found to have either intervene during an arrest or fail to cooperate during such exercises.

Meanwhile, in a late statement, the Public Relations Officer of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force said: “The Police High Command is aware of the videos being circulated of an incident in Nevis that involved the Police. The matter is being looked into and a response will be made.”
