Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 01, 2009 (SKNIS): Tourism stakeholders, students, and government officials will give an energetic start to Tourism Awareness Month with an island-wide torch run on Friday.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture, Lloyd Lazar, will address the runners before they sprint from the starting line at Port Zante at 10:30 a.m. They will head east along the main road and will be joined by primary and high school students in their respective communities.

The final leg begins at approximately 3:30 p.m. and popular local personalities and senior government officials will run from Carib Breweries, Buckley’s, to the Circus in the heart of the capital, Basseterre. Sports Officer in the Department of Sports Craig Connor told SKNIS that he expects a total of 200 runners to participate.

Mr. Lazar noted that this particular event has been very successful in the past as every community in St. Kitts is reminded of the importance of the tourism sector including its numerous economic and social contributions to national development.

Motorists are encouraged to pay due care when driving and persons are encouraged to line the streets to support the runners on Friday, October 02, 2009.

Tourism Awareness Month is being observed under the theme: “Let’s Cooperate and Make Our Tourism Industry Great.”
