Weddings and funerals under Police Compliance radar

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Police Force is chastising residents for the non-compliance of the COVID-19 protocols at funerals and weddings being held in the Federation, over which the Commissioner of Police has expressed concerns.

Speaking at last evening’s (Feb. 11) NEOC media brief, Superintendent Cromwell Henry used the opportunity to remind citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis of the necessary protocols currently in place for the staging of any activity with large crowds.

Funerals, more specific, were singled out by the Superintendent for breaching the current protocols.

“We understand that funerals are a time for mourning the loss of a loved one, and they are necessary. However, the virus does not respect the occasion and persons not taking precautions are at risk, even at a funeral,” noted Henry.

Henry reminded of the protocols as stated in Section 11 of the COVID-19 Prevention and Control Act, which highlights that “a person may attend a funeral except that the funeral shall have a maximum duration not exceeding one hour. The seating arrangement shall allow for a minimum of 6ft between persons and distance markers must indicate where each person must sit. The total number of persons that may be permitted to attend inside of the building is one person for every square feet”.

He noted that similar protocols apply for weddings. However, those recommendations are not being followed and a plea is now being made for undertakers, wedding planners, pastors and other church leaders to pay close attention to the protocols.

Superintendent Henry noted that in addition to the social distancing protocols, the venue should be sanitised prior to the service.

He stressed that everyone entering the venue must be able to have their hands sanitised and they must wear a face mask.

“The protocols apply for these events, notwithstanding that they may be considered religious events. The virus does not discriminate and you’re at the same risks if you do not follow the protocols,” Henry added.

Meanwhile, Henry reminded that those people who are having a wedding reception must also seek permission from the Commissioner of Police before the event is held.

Against that backdrop, it is recommended that all persons should visit www. Police.kn for all the necessary information to gain approval.
