Crime increased on Nevis during first six weeks of 2021

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - THE first six weeks of the year has proven to be a challenge for the police on Nevis as they have seen an increase in the number of crimes committed on the island, with data showing a slight uptick against that of last year during the same period.

Comparative data provided by the Head of the Nevis Division, Superintendent Lyndon David, showed that 26 incidents of criminal activities were reported for the period under review, with 14 reported last year and 19 for 2019.

Speaking on ZIZ Radio this morning (Feb. 15), the Superintendent highlighted that there were three major offences that were reported during that time: Malicious Damage, Larceny and Wounding.

With regards to the offence of Malicious Damage, David explained that criminals continue to break into people’s homes and they have caused significant damage to properties on the island; a growing trend that the police have seen over the period under review.

Speaking to the offence of Larceny, the Superintendent called on the public to take precaution to ensure that they do not fall victim to the act.

“So, we had nine Malicious Damage, nine Larceny reports and we had a wound,” revealed David.

He also called on residents to conduct themselves better when it comes to escalated situations, as wounding incidents leave a very sharp stain on people’s minds.

The Superintendent used the platform to encourage people to harden themselves as targets by making simple changes that could make it hard for individuals to steal their properties.

He warned that people must not leave expensive items on their car seats when they are leaving their vehicles or leaving their doors unlocked.

Additionally, he called on drivers to not leave their vehicles unattended in isolated areas and also for teachers to leave their phones or money unattended where students or the public could easily access them.

Davis recommended that people should install cameras on their homes so that they could see who enters and leave their premises or their neighbours’.

“We are saying to persons, always do these things or any other things that you can do which will bring about the safe result that we are looking for,” added David.”
