BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - INCUMBENT Cricket West Indies President Ricky Skerritt will be challenged by Head of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Anand Sanassie for the top post.

The current CWI Director signalled his intention in a media statement dubbed “Team Sanassie Hope”, where he outlined his six-point plan for the further development of the sport across the region.

With elections scheduled for sometime later this year, the GCB boss pointed to Elite Team Performance, Strengthening Regional Cricket, Revolutionise Grassroots Cricket, Decentralise Power, Women’s Cricket, Expansion and Transformation as his points of focus should his team win the election.

In outlining his love and passion for the sport and to see it develops, Sanasie said it is that drive for West Indies cricket that led him into becoming a servant of the game through cricket administration.

In explaining his pillars of focus, the GCB boss, who has been in Cricket Administration for more than two decades, explained that over the past year several directors of CWI, along with many stakeholders across the region, have reached out and sought to persuade him to consider serving as CWI President.

“Over the past months I have given it deep thought and consideration, discussed it with my family and the executives of the Guyana Cricket Board and today I consider it a distinct honour to announce that I will be contesting the CWI presidency,” he added.

The team of Skerritt/Shallow romped to victory in the last election in 2019, when they won 8-4, unseating Dave Cameron and his team.

Sanasie will be partnered with Calvin Hope of Barbados, who has also been in Cricket Administration for several years.

He revealed that their manifesto was developed following on from wide spurs consultation from across the region, and their full plan  would be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, in details of the pillars, Sanasie explained that they believe that regional cricket requires greater investment from the CWI level. and should they win, his team would implement a system of greater (i) sponsorship share and (ii) larger annual subvention to each territorial board.

Additionally, he believes that there is a need to renew focus and revitalisation in grassroots and school cricket all across the Caribbean.

In addressing the area of Decentralise Power, Sanasie said: “We recognise, critically that over the past two years, there has been a systematic centralisation of power and decision making and the ostracisation and miniaturisation of the territorial boards who are the shareholders of West Indies Cricket acting on behalf of the people of the Caribbean.”

Touching on Women’s Cricket, the GCB boss explained that “the West Indies Women’s Team must be consistently among the best in the world and we will ensure there is a comprehensive strategic measurable programme in place to achieve this”.

He added: “West Indies Cricket must also meaningfully and purposefully pursue expansion into the vast and lucrative North American market as a critical plank of augmenting and guaranteeing financial stability.”
