BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Coronavirus and the roll-out of Vaccines are among major matters to be discussed at the 32nd Inter-Sessional Meeting of Heads of Government.

The two-day Meeting, which started yesterday (Feb. 23) is being Chaired by CARICOM Head, Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley.

Though individually receiving doses from the COVAX facility and the Government of India, CARICOM member states are currently working to find more avenues to source vaccines for the virus.

In a statement, CARICOM asserted that access to vaccines is regarded as crucial to curbing the spread of COVID-19 infections in the region, where many Member States have experienced increases in positive cases.

Officials from the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) are expected to address the Heads on the pandemic.

Additionally, discussions would also be focused on the regional economic recovery and transformation.

“The Heads of Government will examine the status of implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), and any outstanding issues which need to be resolved to ensure that full benefits from the CSME are realised. The CSME is regarded as critical to the Region’s strategy to build economic resilience, and it is felt that the COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the need to accelerate the pace of the integration process,” CARICOM explained.

In addition, the two-day meeting would, among other things, consider recommendations from the  CARICOM Commission on the Economy which was recently re-constituted and mandated to provide advice on implementable solutions to build resilience and push CARICOM economies along the path of sustainable growth and development.

The region’s Food and Nutrition Security agenda, which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and a joint tourism policy would also be deliberated on.

CARICOM relations with the new United States Administration would likely be a matter of critical focus along with Reparations and Regional Security.
