National Bank reports all systems are functional

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AFTER being inoperable more than a week, which had caused discomfort to many and multiple speculations, the St. Kitts-Nevis Anguilla National Bank has announced that it is fully back online.

In a media statement, the financial institution reported that its systems are back online allowing for real time transactions.

The bank recently reported that it suffered an IT problem that resulted in some of its services being down, which had affected all of its sister agencies with many speculating that the bank’s systems were hacked.

Other than saying that it suffered an IT problem, the bank has not given details of what exactly was the problem and the cause that left its operation down for nearly two weeks, which adversely affected its customers.

Banking sources familiar with similar problems as those suffered at the National Bank, explained that the financial institution might have suffered a hack or had a virus within its systems.

Sources opined that if the latter was the case and it was found early, it would have resulted in the IT personnel taking the entire system offline to ensure the entire banking system was not compromised - forcing a full flush of the system which suggests why it was offline for almost a week.

Additionally, the banking sources explained that with the system being offline, the bank was forced to manually input data compounding the problem of the delay in accessing monies that were deposited after the system went down.

Long lines were seen at the bank, with some people standing in the sun for two hours or more to access services.

In its statement issued yesterday (Feb. 23), National Bank informed that the “return to normalcy is a result of the untiring efforts of the staff especially over the past few days which allowed all manual transactions to be uploaded to customers accounts”.

The bank explained that its Online Banking, Mobile Banking and website services are available for people to check their latest balance.

In reassuring its customers, the bank said it has invested significant resources in the IT security system “and we will continue to improve our networks and processes to make them even more robust and resilient”.
