Director General Koichiro Matsuura will pay a short visit to St. Kitts January 13 and 14, 2005.
Basseterre, St. Kitts (December 15, 2005):
At yesterday's joint UNESCO National Commission and Small Islands Voice (SIV) meeting, members were appraised of the upcoming visit of UNESCO's Director General to St. Kitts and Nevis.

Director General Koichiro Matsuura will pay a short visit to St. Kitts January 13 and 14, 2005 during which time he will meet with the National Commission, visit one of the schools where the "Back Chat" group operates and launch the UNESCO Youth Path programme.  A press conference will conclude his activities in the Federation.  This will be the first visit made by a UNESCO Director General to one of the smaller islands in the region.

Director General of the local UNESCO National Commission Mr. Antonio Maynard also placed on record that St. Kitts and Nevis had been elected to sit on the UNESCO executive board, at the UNESCO General Conference that he attended last October in Paris, France.  He emphasized that this was the first time that the Federation had been given such a task and that an appropriate representative will be chosen whose responsibilities will include journeying to Paris, France where meetings will be held twice per year.

Members also discussed Youth Path, a project designed to enable Caribbean young men and women between 15 and 25 to utilize innovative skills for sustainable employment in the areas of community Heritage Tourism and preservation of Heritage states.  Young people in poor communities will be trained in the development and documentation of natural and cultural heritage sites.

Other issues discussed at the meeting included the possibility of a SIV Carnival troupe.
