Federation to receive COVAX doses in three tranches

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MINISTER OF HEALTH Akilah Byron-Nisbett has announced that in the coming months, the Federation would be receiving doses of vaccines from the COVAX facility in three tranches.

Jamaica is the first territory within the region to receive doses of vaccine under the COVAX agreement when, on Monday (Mar. 15), the international agency flew 14,400 doses down to Kingston as its first shipment.

Under that agreement, 15 Caribbean countries are expected to receive 2.1 million doses of COVAX vaccine by May. Those countries are Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

Responding to two questions posed by the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Denzil Douglas, Minister Byron-Nisbett pointed out that under the first phase, St. Kitts and Nevis would receive 21,600 doses of the vaccine from COVAX, which would be able to cover 20 percent of the population.

“These doses, the facility has indicated, will be received in three tranches over the next three months,” the Minister announced.

COVAX had initially promised to deliver the vaccine in February; however, they encountered a number of bureaucratic challenges which have slowed the delivery across the 31 countries that have signed onto the facility.

Minister Byron-Nisbett confirmed to Parliament that the first shipment of the doses would be arriving in the Federation this month.

Under the agreement, COVAX will provide vaccines for at least 20% of the population of each participating country during 2021.

A statement from the World Health Organisation noted that in the first round of vaccine allocation, “all COVAX participating countries will receive doses to vaccinate between 2.2 and 2.6% of their population. The only exceptions are small island developing states, which will receive an allocation of vaccines to cover between 16 and 20% of their population, due to the high logistical cost of delivering small quantities of vaccines”.

Currently, the Federation has a preference for the AstraZeneca Vaccine which is already in circulation, with over 7,000 people being inoculated.

Those inoculations were made possible from donations received from Dominica and the Government of India.
