Choose to be the best in life you can be, Prime Minister Harris tells Explorers Cadets

By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 03, 2021 (SKNIS): “You must choose to be the best in life that you can be, and you must never let anyone tell you that you can’t make it to a better place because the power lies in you,” Prime Minister Dr. The Honourable Timothy Harris told a group of over 50 Explorers Cadets on Thursday, April 01, 2021.

The youth were assembled at the Explorers Headquarters in Phillips for the start of their first ever sleep-in Easter Camp. Prime Minister Harris spoke at a soft opening ceremony that was held at the Headquarters for the camp. There, he encouraged the children to always choose to excel.

“You must choose to go farther than anyone before you…there is no limit,” the Prime Minister said.

The camp runs until April 11, and is being held under the theme Promoting Civic Responsibility in our Nation’s Future Leaders. The Explorers Cadets were first introduced in December last year and is an extension of the Explorers Clubs. There are 12 Explorers Clubs that operate island-wide with about 1,400 members in total. Each Club is coordinated by a Police Officer and the team of Officers is supervised by Inspector Rosemarie Isles-Joseph.

The Prime Minister informed the Cadets that the Explorers movement offered them a structured programme that would help to promote their sense of civic responsibility and awareness of self, in addition to improving their ability to contribute to a better future for the country.

“Through the leadership of the Explorers Clubs, you are taught the values of peace and security in our country and in your lives. You are taught to have a positive view of law enforcement officers and the constructive role they play to keep you, to keep your parents, [and] to keep us all safe.”

He commended the young people for their commitment to the programme and thanked Inspector Isles-Joseph for taking the operation forward. He also commended Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Osmond Petty, M.B.E., for his leadership with the Explorers movement and ensuring it had the Government’s support.

Some of the camp activities include a kite flying competition, daily drill practices, classes in sewing and carpentry, a walk-a-thon, as well as presentations from the Red Cross Society and agencies within the Ministry of National Security.
