Safe walkway for residents of Verchild’s constructed

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 6TH 2009 (CUOPM) – It is now safer for students, senior citizens and residents of Verchilds to walk along the Island’s Main Road.
A 375 meter-long-5 feet-wide walkway and retaining wall have been build on the mountain or hillside of the island’s main road from the Faith Tabernacle Church junction westwards to Church Ghut.
The walkway improves the safe access of residents to essential services such as the church, public transportation, school, the recreation ground, businesses and homes. Previously persons walked on the main road with moving vehicular traffic.
Project Manager of the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNFT) Project, Mr. Osbert de Souza said the construction of the walkway is 95 percent complete.
“Steps leading from the walkway to a side gate of the Verchild’s Recreation Ground are still to be completed,” said De Souza told the Communications Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister (CUOPM) on Tuesday.
Construction of the walkway was by Mr. Keithroy Dyer of Allis Construction.
The Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) programme is a Caribbean Development Bank initiative targeted at improving living conditions in rural poor communities of member Caribbean nations.
