CARICOM lending support to SVG as La Soufriere slowly erupts

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Chairman of CARICOM, Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, has begun mobilising the Caribbean Community to support St. Vincent and the Grenadines as it faces the possibility of an imminent eruption of La Soufriere Volcano.

Government and emergency officials have been seeing an effusive eruption of the volcano since December; however, recent activities including significant plumes of smoke and significant earthquakes in the area have signalled that an eruption is likely.

In a statement issued last evening (Apr. 8), CARICOM informed that member states have offered to house evacuees from the affected areas after a mandatory evacuation order was issued by Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves.

Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia and Barbados are reportedly among the territories that have offered to accommodate some of the evacuees.

“The scientific team from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre (SRC) has been in the country constantly monitoring the volcano and rendering scientific advice to the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines. The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) has been working alongside the St Vincent National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), the SRC and the Regional Security System (RSS),” the statement read.

CDEMA has activated its regional support operation including the deployment of a specialist to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The Agency is providing technical assistance to NEMO with Evacuation and Logistics Planning.
