BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - CHIEF Justice Dame Janice M. Pereira, Judicial Officers and management and staff of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court have expressed support to the Government and people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines following the eruption of La Soufriere Volcano.

The volcano began an explosive eruption on Thursday (Apr. 8) evening, which caused the Government to issue a mandatory evacuation for various sections of the country that were in what was described as the Red Zone,m which is in proximity to the eruption.

In her statement, Hon. Dame Pereira reminded that the volcano has the potential for destruction and has already caused significant displacement.

She encouraged the people of the Eastern Caribbean to find ways as a region to provide support to the people in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“We must remember that we are our brothers and sisters’ keepers,” she said.

“As Chief Justice, I pray that the Almighty God bestows his strength and resilience onto the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the face of yet another unfamiliar challenge. The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court stands in solidarity with them and is committed to providing its full support in their recovery and rehabilitation efforts. No effort will be spared in lending a helping hand and ensuring that access to justice is maintained. We must ensure that St. Vincent and the Grenadines emerges from this disaster stronger and that normalcy quickly returns to the lives of its people,” the Chief Justice asserted.

As the volcano continues to erupt, visibility and air conduction on the island is poor with many persons seeking to flee the territory.

Currently, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica and St. Lucia have all pledged that they would accept persons who are displaced because of the volcano.

Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean has dispatched two small cruise vessels to assist with persons who are affected by the volcano. A third vessel is said to be on standby in event of an emergency.
