The St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce strongly condemns today's double murder of downtown businessman Mr Lorenzo Greene and his wife Michelle Greene, in their home. The Chamber is of the view that this continued spate of violent crime only adds to the fear and helplessness being felt by all members of the Community for their own safety.
These sentiments from the Chamber were expressed today in a letter to Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas. The Chamber feels that the time had come to regain control of the Federation from the criminal elements.
These criminals, who are holding our Country's future to ransom, must be stopped in their tracks as a matter of urgency, a Chamber spokesperson said. However, this cannot be achieved without a wide-scale, national effort in which the Chamber is prepared to play its part, the spokesperson added.
In its letter to the Prime Minister the Chamber called on him to initiate at the earliest possible time in the New Year a structured forum for discussion and planning of a counter-offensive on crime. Members of the Chamber are already being mobilized towards this effort, with a view to presenting to the Prime Minister by the end of January 2006 detailed proposals for short term and long term solutions to the problem.
The Chambers letter to Prime Minister Douglas concluded with the business community's re-affirmation of its full support for the toughest possible Government action allowed by law to address the scourge on our community being brought about by crime. The Chamber also expressed its intention to engage other non-Governmental organisations with a view to making a strong public expression of its abhorrence of the current state of criminal activity in the Country.
