Consumers encouraged to carefully scrutinize perishable items on sale

By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 15, 2021 (SKNIS): Consumers in St. Kitts and Nevis are strongly encouraged to be mindful when purchasing perishable items that are on sale with a drastically reduced price tag.

On the April 14, 2021, edition of the radio and television programme Working for You, Paul Queeley, Director of the Department of Consumer Affairs said that there have been occasions when consumers have purchased an item on sale without realizing that it is about to expire.

Mr. Queeley said that while this is legal since the expiration date has not passed as yet, companies have a responsibility in such an instance.

“You should still give the consumer some information about the products,” he said, referring to business places. He added that the consumer must also question why the items are on sale for such a low price.

“In most cases, if you see the item on sale, you just saw it yesterday … for $50 and it is on sale today for $15, bet your life there is something going on with that product,” the director stated.

Mr. Queeley noted that the balance between businesses trying to make a profit and consumers seeking value for money must be maintained as each party mutually depends on the other.
