Nevis incident sparks refresher courses for Police Officers

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOLLOWING public outcry over the conduct of two male police officers in Nevis during the arrest of Malvern Walwyn of Hardtimes Village, Gingerland, it has prompted the Commissioner of Police to institute a series of refresher courses.

Commissioner Hilroy Brandy has informed this publication that all ranks, excluding senior officers, are currently undergoing refresher courses in how arrests are to be executed and the manner in which they should interact with members of the public.

Back in March, in an attempt to arrest Malvern Walwyn of Hardtimes, Nevis, whom police claimed had resisted, an officer was seen standing on his back as he lay face down in a concrete drain, while another officer stood by without rendering assistance.

Walwyn was subsequently charged with the offences of Simple Wounding, Resisting Arrest and Battery of a Police Officer.

Since then, police have not publicly provided an update on the incident, but Commissioner Brandy told SKNVibes that the officer is still under internal investigation for his conduct.

However, no comment has also been forthcoming regarding the second officer, who some described as an accomplice to the egregious act

Brandy reminded that there is a Code of Ethics that every officer must follow, including how they should carry out an arrest, and what level of force should not be used when executing an arrest.

“As we speak, we are presently doing some refresher courses with all our officers, Corporal, Constables, Sergeants and Inspectors, to reassure that they are serving the public with integrity,” explained Brandy.
