BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -  DESPITE the Government’s imposition of a national curfew, Trinidad and Tobago is continuing to record triple-digit increases of COVID-19 cases in the twin-island Republic.

The latest data from the Ministry of Health showed that as of Tuesday (May 18) evening there were 601 new cases in the country, bringing the overall number of active positive cases to 6,318.

At a press conference yesterday (May 19),  Minister of Health Terrance Dyal Singh announced that 387 of that number are currently hospitalised and an additional 317 deaths.

The Republic recently went into lockdown mode to prevent a widespread outbreak of the virus, which would be its second, in order to prevent the health care system from being overwhelmed.

Minister Dyal Singh noted that the majority of cases that were reported are of persons between the age range of 25-30, and is spread across both male and female.

Speaking to the spread of deaths from the virus in males and females, the Minister highlighted that the data showed 63.1 percent were males while 36.1 percent were of the distaff side.

Against that backdrop, Minister Singh noted that they are seeing some level of tapering off from the peaks that were reached in early April.

He however called on citizens and residents to adhere to the necessary protocols and also to stay home.

The territory’s fight against the pandemic was boosted when it received a shipment of the World Health Organisation-approved Sinopharm COVID-19 Vaccine.

In a statement, the Ministry said that 100,000 doses of the WHO-approved Sinopharm COVID-19 Vaccine, which were manufactured by the Beijing Institute of Biological Products Co. Limited, landed at the Piarco International Airport at 1:09 a.m. yesterday (May 19) morning. amount is expected to inoculate approximately 50,000 residents of the twin-island nation.
