BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AS fighting continues in the Middle East between Israel and Palestine, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has called for peace and a solution to the ongoing problem.
Hundreds are now dead with thousands injured and hundreds of thousands displaced as the neighbouring countries have fired rockets across the borders in escalating violence between the two.
In a media statement today (May 20), CARICOM said it is gravely concerned by the recent escalation in violence between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
The statement noted that CARICOM joins the international community in calling for an immediate ceasefire and end to hostilities.
Latest reports out of the Middle East showed that shelling has continued across the borders as the death toll continues to climb.
According to reports, the problem was inflamed last month when Israeli soldiers marched across the border and were engaged in a number of incidents in Jerusalem, angering the Palestinians during the holy month of Ramadan.
CARICOM further stated that it continues to support the United Nations’ efforts towards a two-state solution as the best way forward.
Meanwhile, there are ongoing talks about a cease fire between the two territories.
