Press Release
This week, it was revealed that the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis slipped to 62nd in the world on the Human Development Index. Under the Labour Government over the past five years, the Federation's Human Development Index rank has tumbled 23 places from 39th to 62nd. In 2004, the Federation was ranked 39th, 49th in 2006, 51st in 2007, 54th in 2008 and 62nd this year. The drop happened under Denzil Douglas' watch.

The Human Development Index is calculated by the United Nations and takes into account life expectancy, literacy and education statistics along with gross domestic product (GDP), economic statistics and a number of other factors related to quality of life.

"The statistics themselves serve to tell the story about what's happening to our people. The people of St. Kitts & Nevis are feeling pain," said PAM Leader Lindsay Grant. "The fact that the Human Development Index is dropping indicates that our education system is declining and our kids aren't learning as much as they used to. It tells us, that, under Labour, our economy is tanking, and people have less money in their pockets. It tells us that crime is on the rise and it's making people scared. And, it tells us that our health care system is deteriorating."

"After 15 long years, Denzil Douglas has run out of gas," said Grant. "The statistics tell us that, but, the statistics are only a reflection of the pain people are feeling. The failed Labour policies of the past won't fix our troubles. We need new ideas and fresh leadership to tackle our many challenges."

Grant concluded, "So, let's turn around our economy, get people to work and get money in people's pockets. Let's tackle the crime and murder crisis that has spiraled out of control under Labour's watch. Let's make sure our kids are learning and the sick are cared for. The statistics reflect the reality: the Federation is on the wrong track and it's time for change."
