AG Byron clears air on SCASPA’s media statement

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A media statement from the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA), which spoke to strict restrictions, has raised concerns in the public domain and Cabinet has been forced to step in and put a lid on it.

The government agency, in a recent media statement disseminated yesterday (May 26), indicated that, among others things, “that effective June 1, 2021, all persons wishing to conduct business at the Ports’ facilities (both Air and Sea) must present proof of Covid-19 Vaccination or a valid negative RT-PCR Test taken within the past 14 (fourteen) days”.

With only 51 percent of the adult population vaccinated, it raised alarm bells in many quarters, and Cabinet has now intervened in the matter.

Attorney-General Vincent Byron Jr. addressed the matter while speaking at last evening’s (May 26) NEOC media brief, where he explained that the document which was published on social media was brought to the Government’s attention and “was inadvertently leaked and published”.

He told the nation that at this time “Cabinet has given no such consideration or decision. And, so, we would want to say that until such time as the Cabinet has supported such a decision we would hope that this document would be disregarded at this time”.

Up to news time, the agency has not commented on or issued a statement on the memo sent to the media yesterday.
