BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A male resident of Conaree was yesterday (Oct. 10) held at the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport with two firearms and a quantity of ammunition.

According to Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Cromwell Henry, Demitrius Martin (39) of Conaree Village was arrested and charged yesterday after two pistols and a quantity of ammunition were found in his baggage at the airport.

“At about mid-day on Saturday, October 10, Demitrius Martin, a passenger of a LIAT flight from Puerto Rico, went to the Customs area to clear his luggage. On searching the luggage, Customs Officers found two firearms, a 9mm pistol and a .380 pistol, and a quantity of ammunition. The police were called in, Martin was handed over to them and he was arrested and charged with possession of firearm and possession of ammunition,” Henry said.

He also told SKNVibes that investigations are ongoing and further charges are likely to be instituted.

Martin is the second person over a 16-month period to be held by Customs Officers at the airport in connection with firearm possession.

On June 12, 2008, Verlyn Zakers of Newton Ground was arrested and charged for illegally importing six firearms, 400 rounds of ammunition and a quantity of magazines. She maintained her innocence but was however convicted and sentenced to serve a term of imprisonment at Her Majesty’s Prison.
